Got a flight in Mig 29 back in the early eighties out of Debrecan in eastern Hungary. At about 38,000 feet I lost audio contact with the pilot. Aircraft pitched up and soon lunged forward into a stall. I could just make out the pilot lunged forward over the controls. I made radio control with Debrecan and they instructed me on how to get basic control over the aircraft. As soon as I did I noticed two F16's on my right at 3 o'clock. I Thought hell can this situation get any worse. I radioed for permission to engage the f16's but there was no response. So I thought what have i got to lose, its them or me. I realised I'd no missiles so it was guns only. My best hope was to get in tight, I made a six g turn and the whole airframe was rattling. Just as I was about to pass out the tail of one of the f16's came into view at my 12 o clock. I squeezed the trigger and before I knew it I was flying through a cloud of smoke and General Dynamics shrapnel. Down to my right I could see the guy had ejected. The other F16 was nowhere to be seen. After they guided me back to Debrecan I came in hard and collapsed the right main gear. They gave me a hard time about that. We figured the pilot had passed out due to a heavy duck lunch, followed by an insane amount of marzipan cake. We had a few beers with the downed f16 pilot that night and he was OK about the whole thing, a little pissed about all the paperwork he would have to fill in. He had minor ejection injury; scarring to his left dorsal aorta. He was a swell guy he gave me a unit insignia patch which i still have, lost at home somewhere. Later that night I woke up and realised the whole thing was a dream. I farted under the covers and went back to sleep, thinking that's the closest to afterburner I'll ever come. Luckily I was fast asleep before the smell hit my nostrils.
